Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year, and it holds a genuine footnote in automotive history as the first hybrid SUV built in North America. That first-generation car (2005-2012, closely related to the Mercury Mariner Hybrid and the Mazda Tribute platform) used a full hybrid system Ford developed with clear influence from Toyota's approach.

The early cars (2005-2007) paired a 2.3-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with an electric motor; from 2008 Ford moved to a 2.5-litre Duratec Atkinson unit. Both drove through a planetary electronic CVT (eCVT) with no conventional gearbox to wear out.

The Escape Hybrid's core hybrid hardware has a strong reputation — the eCVT and Atkinson engine are durable, and the electric drive removes a lot of the wear items that trouble conventional autos.
Germany and Europe
US cars run amber rear turn signals in some years, lack a rear fog lamp, and use US-market lighting and MPH clusters.
US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.
